[Energy professionals are all watching this—click ‘Follow’ in the top right corner.] High temperatures are affecting scrap steel processing! Electric furnace profits are rising rapidly! Scrap steel rebounds on the upside! On July 12, the domestic scrap steel market continued to recover, showing a relatively stable trend. According to data from steel companies that monitor pricing, on the 12th, a total of 34 steel mills raised the prices they pay for scrap steel, by amounts ranging from 20 to 70 yuan. These mills are mainly located in provinces such as Jiangsu, Hebei, Guangxi, Guangdong, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Yunnan, and Chongqing. No steel mills have reduced their purchase prices for scrap steel. In recent days, the country has entered the period of extreme heat, with high temperatures occurring in various regions, especially in provinces such as Anhui, Henan, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang. The arrival of high temperatures has a direct impact on the processing activities in scrap steel processing facilities. After all, few workers who handle dry scrap steel can stay in air-conditioned environments all the time; working and cutting in hot weather, with sweat pouring down, is the norm. If it drops any further, I’m afraid no one will do it. The current advantages for scrap steel are hot weather, slow processing speeds, and limited supply, while steel mills’ profits are rising rapidly; these factors offset the negative impacts resulting from production cuts. This led to a slight rebound in scrap steel prices. Most warehouse owners say there has been stock-pirating in recent times, but there is also little willingness to hold inventory; the approach is mainly to buy and sell quickly. Overall, although the three categories of building materials, steel billets, and scrap steel appear to be thriving at present, there are still underlying issues lurking beneath the surface. Over the weekend, news of a reserve requirement ratio cut spread widely; the magnitude of the cut exceeded market expectations. Commodities posted overall gains in overnight trading. However, today, futures prices of various commodities declined to varying degrees at the opening. There are continuous reports of production cuts across the industry. Currently, major provinces in East China have announced plans to reduce output. As a secondary material, scrap steel continues to sustain the market despite tight supply levels; most steel mills still show some willingness to use scrap steel. However, under the circumstances of production restrictions, it is inevitable that demand for scrap steel will decline further. Given that high temperatures and heavy rainfall also lead to a significant reduction in scrap steel availability, it is advisable to keep monitoring the extent and scope of these production cuts, while remaining vigilant regarding potential risks. Short-term scrap steel prices are likely to remain stable or see cautious behavior.
