Recently, Exxon announced the development of a new type of synthetic graphite that can extend the lifespan of electric vehicle batteries by up to 30%. ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods called it a “revolutionary leap in battery performance.” He also revealed that several electric vehicle manufacturers are testing this technology. A few days earlier, Exxon announced the acquisition of synthetic graphite manufacturer Superior Graphite to support its entry into the battery anode graphite market. Synthetic graphite is used not only in electric vehicle batteries but also in energy storage systems. Compared to mined natural graphite, the production process of synthetic graphite is more controllable, results in lower costs and more consistent quality, enables faster and more efficient large-scale production, and offers graphite products that are superior to those available on the current market. This acquisition and technological breakthrough follow Exxon’s decision to enter the lithium mining sector in 2023. Despite the weak sales of electric vehicles in the United States, Exxon announced two years ago its plan to produce lithium resources in Arkansas, with the goal of becoming a leading supplier of electric vehicle batteries by 2030. Exxon plans to achieve mass production of lithium by 2027 and is evaluating opportunities for global expansion; it expects its lithium production to be sufficient to meet the manufacturing needs of over a million electric vehicles per year by 2030. Through recent strategic moves, Exxon’s operations now cover most segments of the electric vehicle battery supply chain.
