Since the industrialization of EDI membrane stack technology in 1986, thousands of EDI systems have been installed worldwide. It has seen significant development especially in industries such as pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, power generation, and surface cleaning, and is also widely used in areas such as wastewater treatment, beverages, and microbiology. The EDI unit is used after the reverse osmosis system to replace the traditional mixed-bed ion exchange technology (MB-DI) in producing stable deionized water.
