The substation of the world’s largest single-site green hydrogen-integrated coal-based olefin project was successfully powered on. On June 30, the 220-kilovolt substation for the Baofeng Olefins facility of Inner Mongolia Baofeng Coal-Based New Materials Co., Ltd. was brought online successfully. The operation of this substation not only provides a reliable power supply for the commissioning and operation of the Baofeng Coal-Based New Materials project, but it also lays the foundation for the future production of green hydrogen through the integration of wind and solar energy to generate green electricity. At 10:15 a.m. on that day, at the 3-million-ton-per-year olefin production project of Inner Mongolia Baofeng Coal-based New Materials Co., Ltd., once the main transformer was successfully connected, the Baofeng Olefins 220-kilovolt substation was powered on and came online officially. Since the full-scale construction of Phase I of the 2.6 million tons/year coal-to-olefins project and the accompanying 400,000 tons/year olefins production project coupled with green hydrogen integration by Inner Mongolia Baofeng Coal-Based New Materials Co., Ltd. began in March 2023, the project team has been working to expedite progress while ensuring quality and safety. As a result, the construction site has seen rapid developments. So far, the main civil construction and design work have been completely completed, and the installation of the steel structure is nearing completion. Among them, there are a total of 11,470 pieces of equipment for the project, with an installation rate of 81% ; The total weight of the steel structures is 186,700 tons; the installation rate for those that have arrived has reached 95%, and 65% of the piping prefabrication work has been completed. All units have fully entered the final stage of equipment and process piping installation, with several of them reaching key milestones, which will lay a solid foundation for the project to come online and operate as scheduled. According to the project leader, the goal is to complete the ignition of the first boiler by the end of June this year, produce polyolefin products in the first batch by October, and have the entire production process up and running by the end of the year. The total investment in this project is 67.3 billion yuan. It aims to replace oil with coal and fossil fuels with new energy sources, in order to build the world’s largest olefin plant. The plant is planned to produce 13.25 million tons of methanol, 5 million tons of olefins, 2.5 million tons of polyethylene, and 2.5 million tons of polypropylene per year. The methanol production will account for over 16% of the country’s total methanol output, while the olefin production will account for over 9% of the country’s total olefin output. The first phase of the project involves an investment of 47.8 billion yuan, with an annual production capacity of 7.42 million tons of methanol, 3 million tons of polyolefins, 1.5 million tons of polyethylene, and 1.5 million tons of polypropylene. Through the integration of wind and solar energy, 2.5 billion cubic meters of green hydrogen are produced; this green hydrogen is then used to replace coal and oil in the production of 1.17 million tons of green methanol and 400,000 tons of green olefins. It is the largest chemical manufacturing enterprise in the world to use new energy sources to replace fossil fuels on such a scale, thereby paving the way for a scientific development path toward \"carbon neutrality\" in the field of energy chemistry. Once the project is fully completed, it will be able to generate annual revenues of over 60 billion yuan, an industrial added value of 40 billion yuan, and tax payments of over 6 billion yuan.
