Completion of HuaDian-DOE Mulei Carbon Dioxide Energy Storage Project 2025-07-22 11:52:33 Recently, the main structure of the main building for the HuaDian-DOE Mulei Carbon Dioxide Energy Storage Project – the world’s largest carbon dioxide compression energy storage project, covering an area of 565,600 square meters, equivalent to 80 football fields – was completed. This project was overseen by Dongfang Steam Turbine Co., Ltd., part of the Dongfang Electric Group. Located in Mulei Kazakh Autonomous County, Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, this project is a demonstration project for new types of energy storage systems that are designed to complement large-scale wind and solar power facilities in desert, Gobi, and arid regions. It is planned to have a capacity of 600,000 kilowatts for wind power, 400,000 kilowatts for photovoltaic power, and 1 million kWh for energy storage. The construction will include main factories, tank areas, and comprehensive facilities; once completed, it will become the world’s largest compressed carbon dioxide energy storage project. Since work began last September, the project management team, supervisors, designers, equipment suppliers, labor providers, and front-line workers have organized their efforts in a scientific manner, mobilizing all available resources to tackle key tasks. Overcoming challenges such as strong winds and sandstorms, extreme heat, and harsh winter conditions, they worked together to resolve the difficulties and obstacles associated with the project construction. Through meticulous work, they managed to reduce the construction period from 16 months to 12 months, successfully reaching the milestone of completing the building structure. This has laid a solid foundation for subsequent tasks such as equipment installation and debugging. The person in charge of Dongfang Steam Turbine said that going forward, the project will continue to be treated as a \"top priority,\" with enhanced oversight of safety and quality, so as to drive its further development and ensure that it becomes a high-quality, model, and exemplary project. It is reported that the project utilizes a non-reburning compressed carbon dioxide energy storage technology, allowing for an energy storage duration of up to 8 hours and a power generation duration of 10 hours. The project is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year, providing advanced and reliable energy support to address the issue of integrating large-scale new energy sources into the grid as well as to support the \"West-to-East Power Transmission\" project.
