Recently, significant progress has been made in the construction of the closed coking removal project at Liaohe Petrochemical Company, which was carried out by the Dalian branch of China Kunlun Engineering. With the precise installation of the exhaust gas washing and desulfurization tower, all the major lifting operations for this project have been completed successfully, marking the successful conclusion of the main construction phase of the project. It is reported that the modular lifting of the steel structure for large-scale dewatering tanks, as well as the lifting to increase the height of the external platforms of ultra-high coke towers, are the key and most challenging construction tasks in this project. They also serve as benchmark points for assessing the project team’s capabilities in large-scale lifting operations and its skills in precision construction. The overall steel frame of the dehydration tank is constructed using a modular prefabrication and overall lifting method; the weight of each component is 160 tons, with dimensions of 20 meters in length, 15 meters in width, and 12 meters in height. It constitutes a large-span, high-weight structural element. Its structure features numerous connection points, stringent requirements for positioning accuracy, and great difficulties in controlling lifting balance; it demands extremely high standards regarding the location of the lifting station, the placement of lifting points, the selection of rigging, and force balance. To ensure that the lifting operation is completed successfully in one go, an 800-ton crawler crane is used as the main lifting equipment. The lifting conditions, operating radius, and lifting parameters are carefully calculated, and the entire process—including trial lifting, lifting, rotation, placement, and positioning—is managed in a standardized manner. The aerial posture and alignment deviations of the components were monitored throughout the entire process, which enabled effective control of construction-related risks such as structural deformation, component displacement, and misalignment during docking. This allowed for the precise positioning, leveling, and fixation of the heavy-duty modular frames, thus completing the lifting operation with high quality. Meanwhile, the renovation and lifting work on the external steel structure platform of the coke tower was completed successfully, overcoming the challenges associated with lifting operations at a height of 94 meters. Due to various adverse factors such as a narrow working area at the site, concurrent maintenance activities on the owner’s equipment, and significant wind loads at heights, it was extremely difficult to assemble and fix the components at high elevations during this lifting operation. The project team deployed a 126-meter-long boom crawler crane in a precise manner, optimized the operation radius and lifting conditions scientifically, and took advantage of the high stability of this large-scale lifting equipment to enhance the ability to carry out construction work at heights despite various disturbances. By selecting optimal wind-low periods for operations and installing wind-catching ropes in multiple directions to provide restraint, the shaking and displacement of components caused by wind loads are effectively avoided, enabling the completion of all procedures related to aerial alignment and fixation to high standards. In addition, the 27-meter-long, 32-ton exhaust gas scrubbing desulfurization tower was successfully hoisted into place. Thus, all major lifting operations for the project have been successfully completed, and the key construction pathways are now fully connected, laying a solid foundation for subsequent multi-disciplinary construction work and system debugging.
