I would like to ask whether LNG stations can achieve true zero leakage. During the standardization inspections at our plant, those in charge require zero leakage of oil and gas; even the slightest leakage is considered a serious incident. The compressors in our factory are those made by Shengyu 10 years ago; their technical quality is really inferior to that of imported compressors. The manufacturer has come to the factory many times to provide guidance, but there’s really no solution to the oil leakage problem. Additionally, those conducting the inspections used PPM-level combustible gas detectors for detecting gas leaks; leaks in the gaskets of certain valves, as well as leaks in the welds of root valves, could not be fixed without shutting down the plant. It’s really worrying; I just want to know whether there are any LNG facilities, especially those that have been in operation for over 10 years, that can truly achieve zero leaks
How could there be any leakage? The ultimate goal is to handle things promptly and prevent accidents from occurring.
Some leaks cannot be dealt with on the spot; what about the flange pressure of the main pipeline? Pressure gauge root valve pressure? These are all minor leaks, but dealing with them comes at the cost of shutting down the plant. Now the task of preparing for inspections is even more demanding. All we can do is hang signs indicating potential problems, strengthen inspections, increase monitoring frequency, and establish emergency management procedures and measures.

LNG valves are designed for ultra-low temperatures of -162°C; there is a certain level of leakage allowed for such conditions, as specified by standards, but zero leakage is also achievable depending on the technology used. Therefore, the requirement for zero leakage is indeed possible.
Zero leakage is achievable; it’s just a matter of investment. As for the issues mentioned by the original poster, such as aging of valve seals and compressors, they can also be resolved as long as maintenance is carried out in a timely manner, along with the appropriate technical expertise and funding.
Zero leakage is impossible! It’s possible in theory, but it’s impossible in practice. If the packing of your long-stem gate valve is from an older valve, it may be worn out; when you open and close the valve, some gas escapes along the valve stem, but in small amounts. Using soapy water for inspection can reveal bubbles forming, but this minimal amount of leakage is just a trace of residue on the valve core and can be ignored. However, leaks at the welds are absolutely not allowed; production must be halted and a large amount of fluid must be drained for maintenance.
Achieving zero leaks should be technically possible; it’s just a matter of investment. Once the funds are available, all leaks can be resolved
Generally, abroad, double-layer leakage protection is used to achieve zero leakage. I mainly want to implement double-layer leakage protection at pipe fittings, flange sealing surfaces, valves, and containers. Thank you to all experts for their suggestions
