According to Sinochem New Network, recently, Brunei Energy Services and Trade Company (BEST) extended its long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with the global energy trader Vitol. The agreement stipulates that from 2028 to 2031, BEST will supply Vitor with up to 4 LNG carriers per year, thereby ensuring a steady supply of fuel for the latter’s Asian business operations. The initial agreement between the two parties was launched in 2023 and is valid for 5 years, with an annual gas supply volume of around 400,000 tons. This renewal is aimed at securing future supply levels, deepening the partnership between Brunei’s LNG industry and Vitol, and establishing a long-term and stable foundation for Brunei’s LNG exports. The agreement underscores Brunei’s status as a reliable LNG supplier, meeting the needs of Asian buyers for long-term supply security. Although liquidity in the spot LNG market has improved, medium- to long-term contracts remain crucial for supply chain stability. They are essential for Vitol in serving its diverse customers in Asia, helping it to optimize its regional supply network. For BEST, this move underscores its core role as the entity responsible for the commercial marketing of LNG in Brunei, enabling synergy with the country’s established upstream and liquefaction facilities. Amid intensified competition in global LNG exports, renewing contracts with giants can stabilize Brunei’s revenue and strengthen its market influence. Brunei has been exporting LNG for over 50 years, with its core markets in Asia; in recent years, more emphasis has been placed on the flexibility and reliability of supply. This renewal reflects a trend in Asia’s LNG supply chain toward preferring established producers; given the constraints posed by costs and regulations on new projects, renewal has become a key means of mitigating supply risks.
