Air Canada and Oman LNG to Build World’s Largest Synthetic Methane Plant 2025-07-24 15:24:13 Recently, Air Canada announced that it has signed a preliminary feasibility study contract with Oman LNG to build a synthetic methane production plant in that country. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 110,000 tons, and construction is scheduled to begin in the early years after 2030; once completed, it will become one of the largest synthetic methane production facilities in the world. Air Canada also announced that it had previously signed a contract with Oman to carry out preliminary design work and cost assessments for the initial demonstration plant. Construction of this pilot plant is scheduled to begin in 2026, with operation set to start in 2029; it will be Oman’s first facility for producing synthetic methane. The project planned to be built will desalinate seawater and produce hydrogen through electrolysis. The electricity needed will be supplied by renewable sources such as solar and wind energy in Oman. The “green hydrogen” obtained in this way will react with the captured carbon dioxide to produce methane, which will then be liquefied and exported. Air Canada can provide a complete package of seawater desalination equipment, water electrolysis equipment, and methanation equipment. Air Canada’s capabilities in design optimization, reducing project timelines, and cutting costs have been recognized by Oman LNG. Oman has formulated a **green hydrogen strategy and is accelerating the use of renewable energy to build a decarbonized economy. Air Canada and Oman LNG signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the commercialization of methanation in March 2024, and the cooperation to build a synthetic methane production plant is one of the concrete steps taken to implement this agreement.
