TotalEnergies restarts Mozambique’s $20 billion LNG project

French energy giant TotalEnergies has restarted a liquefied natural gas development project off the coast of Mozambique, with an investment value of several billion dollars. Nearly five years after the project came to a standstill in April 2021 due to force majeure, construction work has resumed. At a meeting held in Afungi on January 29, 2026, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, and Daniel Shano, President of the Republic of Mozambique, jointly announced the full resumption of onshore and offshore operations for Mozambique’s liquefied natural gas project. This restart is based on the decision to lift the force majeure status and resume project activities on November 7, 2025.
