According to Sinochem New Network, recently Argentina signed its first long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) export agreement through Southern Energy SA (SESA) with Securing Energy for Europe GmbH (SEFE), a company controlled by the German government. Under the agreement, SESA will supply 2 million tons per year of LNG to SEFE starting from the end of 2027, with a contract duration of 8 years. This agreement was finalized based on the memorandum of understanding signed in December 2025. The CEO of SEFE said that this is also the first time a German energy company has received LNG cargo from Argentina. Against the backdrop of European buyers seeking to diversify their gas supplies from the Atlantic basin in order to reduce geopolitical risks associated with traditional natural gas, this agreement marks a key step forward in the commercialization of the resources in Vaca Muerta, Argentina. This export relies on Phase 1 of the floating liquefaction project planned by SESA in Gulf of San Matías, Río Negro Province; it will utilize the FLNG vessel \"Hilli Episeyo\" owned by Golar LNG, with a liquefaction capacity of 2.45 million tons per year and a tank capacity of 125,000 cubic meters. The contract volume of 2 million tons accounts for over 80% of the ship’s nominal capacity. The project plans to add a second floating unit in the long term, bringing the total export capacity to around 6 million tons per year. The gas source will come from the Vaca Muerta shale area in the Neuquén Basin, produced from the blocks operated by partners, and transported via pipelines to be liquefied on the coast of Rio Negro.
