Standards for the determination of lithium ions in wastewater
I wonder what discharge standards need to be met after the wastewater is treated by the poster? Does the standard specify requirements for lithium content? It seems that many relevant standards do not specify the lithium emission limits or the prescribed testing methods. The determination of lithium can generally be carried out using ion chromatography (ISO 14911-1998 Water quality – Ion chromatographic method for the determination of soluble lithium ions, sodium ions, ammonium ions, potassium ions, manganese ions, calcium ions, magnesium ions, strontium ions, and barium ions in water and wastewater), or graphite furnace atomic absorption, among other methods. If no specific regulations are available, it is appropriate to refer to ISO 14911-1998 for comparison.

This standard does not specify any emission limits for lithium; then why measure lithium? Even if 1% or one part per million of lithium is detected, it’s not possible to determine whether it complies with the standards. As the saying goes, “If the law doesn’t prohibit it, then one can break it” – why go to the extra trouble? If a company wants to know the initial values before wastewater treatment or the lithium content after treatment, ion chromatography should work for this purpose; it is advisable to look up the relevant testing methods.

If a region needs to control lithium levels in the water being treated, appropriate methods should be identified based on the specified testing criteria and accuracy requirements, and standards for those testing methods should be established. Also, the methods for treating lithium-containing wastewater need to be carefully considered. It doesn’t seem easy to handle. Expert advice can be sought to determine whether ion chromatography can meet the technical requirements for detection. If there is no clear source of lithium-containing wastewater, there is no need to consider lithium testing.
Lithium is a rare element; how can there be significant amounts of lithium ions in urban wastewater? It would be best for the poster to clarify the details of the sewage samples.
