Coal-to-aromatics technologies can be divided into two main categories: 1. Technologies for directly producing aromatics from syngas; 2. The indirect synthesis of aromatics from syngas technology, which involves producing methanol from syngas and then using it to manufacture aromatics. The technology for producing aromatics indirectly from syngas is further divided into: 1) methanol aromatization technology, which starts with methanol and aims to produce the aromatics BTX ; 2) Toluene methylation technology for the production of p-xylene ; 3) A combined technology for producing olefins and aromatics as by-products.
In our country, the main technologies for producing aromatics from methanol are FMTA technology and MTA technology. 1. Tsinghua University’s Fluidized Bed Methanol to Arenes technology (FMTA). In 2011, Tsinghua University collaborated with Beijing Huadian Coal Industry Group to build and operate an industrial pilot plant for the production of aromatics from methanol, with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year; simultaneously, a process package with a capacity of 600,000 tons per year was developed. The 1.2 million-ton methanol-to-aromatics project at Huadian Yulin is under construction. 2. The fixed-bed methanol to aromatics technology (MTA), a collaboration between the Shanxi Coal Chemistry Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Saiding Engineering Co., Ltd.
