I’ve been paying attention to this device, but there’s very little information available online regarding its manufacturing process. Is there anyone who has worked with this device before? Could you provide a brief overview? What are the main materials used in this device? Are there any other by-products besides MTBE?
The general process flow is as follows: The C4 fraction, which contains approximately 50–60% n-butylene, undergoes pretreatment before being fed into a skeletal isomerization reactor [at a temperature of around 300–400°C], where about 40% of the n-butylene is converted into isobutylene. After the reaction, the heavier components are separated from the C4 fraction; the C4 fraction at the top of the tower is fed into an etherification reaction or catalytic distillation, which is the typical process for MTBE synthesis. Depending on the source of the C4 feedstock, there are some improved solutions available.

That’s how it’s called in the industry – heteroolefins, which are actually by-products of isomerization; they result from the oligomerization and cracking of butylene on catalysts, as well as from aromaticization side reactions. They contain a high proportion of olefins, and their main use is in oil blending.
