We have one York screw compressor that is used to compress propylene, propane, and syngas; the outlet temperature is controlled at 80 degrees
Why is the outlet temperature of the compressor using water spray also controlled at 75 degrees Celsius? If we know why it’s controlled at 75 degrees for those using oil spray, then what about those using water spray?
This is related to the saturated vapor pressure of the refrigerant and the design pressure of the equipment or pipes; once the temperature exceeds a certain level, the pressure is estimated to exceed the designed value
The use of an oil-injected screw to reduce temperature is mainly due to considerations related to the refrigeration oil. The spray screw is unclear. Propane cannot be sprayed at the outlet, as it is the area with the highest pressure; there is no other place from where the liquid can be sprayed there
Water is sprayed at the inlet to control the outlet temperature at 75°C.
Controlling the exhaust temperature of the spray screw at 75°C is the result of various trade-offs; there are no strict numerical limits. If the exhaust temperature is reduced, more water is required for circulation (the lower the temperature, the greater the amount of water needed), which may lead to higher costs for pumps and other equipment, as well as for pipes and valves. If the exhaust temperature is increased, the amount of water sprayed decreases, and the spray screw is very sensitive to changes in water volume within this temperature range – even slight changes in water volume or exhaust pressure can cause rapid changes in the exhaust temperature. Generally, the exhaust temperature alarm is set around 95°C, which may result in frequent activation of this alarm. The last point is not a cause in itself; at 75°C, the exhaust state is roughly a two-phase gas-liquid state, and different water filtration measures can be adopted according to the user’s requirements regarding water content.
