Can a centrifugal pump be installed without a foundation? Here, in order to meet deadlines, we skip the foundation work and fix the pump base directly to the ground using expansion bolts. What are the potential hazards of doing this?
The small pump isn’t a big problem, but the large pump still requires a solid foundation
It depends on the pump type and size. Up to 55 kilowatts is fine; for higher capacities, a foundation is required.
It is recommended that the design institute provide the design documents, and construction should be carried out based on those documents
The ground around a newly installed unit will inevitably settle to some extent; without a foundation, over time the stress on the pump and the inlet and outlet pipes will gradually increase, leading to problems
Can concrete-hardened floors also sink? Have you encountered any actual incidents of sinking?
When the groundwater level is low, the hardened surface will rise as well
For temporary use or long-term use? It can’t be makeshift; if used over the long term, a proper foundation must be established.
Is a frame made of channel steel being used? Should a cast-iron base be used instead, fixed to the concrete floor with expansion screws?
Some companies, driven by the need for efficiency and speed, use channel steel to construct a frame and secure it with expansion bolts – and that’s sufficient. However, if the equipment requires certification, involving evaluations, inspections, and so on, **regulations dictate that there must be a proper foundation, as well as proper grounding of the equipment, and so forth
