I would like to ask the experienced experts on this forum: what was the intended purpose behind designing turbines to shut down when the vacuum level falls too low, below 0.012 MPa? What was the original intention behind designing certain turbines to shut down when the vacuum level exceeds 0.040 MPa?
The design intent of triggering a shutdown in a turbine when the vacuum level is too low is to protect the equipment and improve efficiency. When the vacuum level is below 0.012 MPa, it indicates that there may be a leak in the condenser, insufficient cooling water flow, or other abnormalities in the system. This can lead to reduced efficiency of the turbine and increased energy consumption; in severe cases, it may even cause damage to the equipment. Therefore, to avoid greater losses, it shuts down automatically when a certain low vacuum level is reached. The original intention behind designing the turbine to shut down when the vacuum level exceeds 0.040 MPa is to account for the fact that under high-vacuum conditions, the internal components of the equipment (such as bearings and seals) may be damaged due to excessive external pressure, as well as to establish a safe operating limit from a design perspective. The stability and safety of equipment operation in a high-vacuum environment cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, a high vacuum threshold is set to ensure that the turbine operates in a safe working environment. .
