What is the difference between a water filling test and a hydrostatic test? Should pressure vessels undergo a hydrostatic test or a water filling test?
Looking at the drawings, there are design pressures and technical requirements.
The so-called water filling test for detecting leaks involves filling the container with water or applying a pressure equivalent to a water column height of one or two meters, in order to check for any leaks or deformations in the container; this method is applied to containers under normal pressure. Pressure vessels are generally subjected to hydrostatic testing to check their strength and integrity.
The term \"atmospheric pressure vessel\" is actually quite ambiguous; it is necessary to distinguish clearly between devices that are in communication with the atmosphere and those that are sealed with a pressure below 0.1 MPa. Equipment under normal pressure that is usually in contact with the atmosphere is tested for leaks by filling it with water; whereas for sealed equipment under pressure, a pressure test should be conducted.

But our quality assurance engineer said that as long as the drawings are prepared, it’s possible to conduct a water leak test. But actually carry out a pressure test.
Whether it is a water filling leak test or a pressure test, the ultimate goal is to evaluate the strength and sealing quality of the container; as for which type of test to conduct, it depends on the design specifications of the container itself. Those with a normal operating pressure of less than 0.1 MPa are considered atmospheric pressure vessels. If testing for leaks with water cannot reflect the pressure under normal conditions, then a pressure test should be conducted. Containers conforming to GB150 must undergo pressure resistance tests.
