I would like to ask what the differences are between different types of packing. For example, is there a big difference between the wetting packing used in cooling towers and the corrugated packing used in distillation towers? Can they be used interchangeably?
The wetting fillers in cooling towers are generally made of plastic, while the corrugated fillers in distillation towers are made of stainless steel; moreover, their specific surface areas differ greatly, so they cannot be used interchangeably.
So if I use the packing from the distillation tower in the cooling tower, would it be more effective?
It won’t necessarily get better. The flow rate in the cooling tower is high, while the corrugated packing in the distillation tower has a much lower porosity, which leads to flooding in the distillation tower.
Thank you for your reply. I have another question: I am currently building a humidifier tower to humidify and warm the air. The temperature of the water is quite high, around 80-90 degrees, while the air is to be heated to 60-70 degrees. Since the thermal process is similar to that of a cooling tower, the requirements regarding heat and mass transfer are higher than those in a cooling tower. It seems that the fillers used in ordinary cooling towers are not sufficient for these requirements; therefore, I am thinking of using fillers with a larger surface area and better performance, as those used in distillation processes. Is this feasible?
You can look for the data on the existing cooling tower – the water temperature entering the cooling tower and the steam temperature inside it – to see if such a possibility exists. Water at 80-90 degrees produces steam (wet air) at 60-70 degrees; pressure reduction and flash evaporation are achieved by the fans located above
First of all, the fillers cannot be changed arbitrarily. Secondly, the difference is significant. Different materials and shapes directly result in varying properties of the fillers, as do different application scenarios (such as the properties and state of the medium). This cannot be explained in just a few words; it’s better to consult professional books for accurate information.
