The cooling coil is helically wound around the outer surface of the cylinder. How should the heat transfer area be calculated? Theoretically, the contact area should be a line contact; wouldn’t the heat transfer area then be zero?
Personally, I understand that the outer surface area of the coil is the heat transfer area; this needs to be verified with the process specifications.
As a supplementary note, there is an insulation layer on the outer surface of the cylinder
If it’s based on the entire outer surface, then the mode of heat transfer is radiation heat transfer, right?
Here, there are generally two scenarios: one is to directly increase the length of the coil and its nominal diameter through the manufacturing process; Another case is when the process specifications indicate at what liquid level or below an external coil heating system should be installed, what the spacing between coils should be, and what diameter of coils to use. When it comes to simply mentioning the heating surface area of the external coil, I generally assume that he’s referring to the outer surface area of the coil. In cases where insulation is used, both the vessel and the coil are covered by the insulation layer. I believe my understanding is well-founded; however, if there’s any doubt, it would be wise to confirm with the process engineer what exactly he means by “surface area”
