I would like to ask fellow sailors: why should oxygen cylinders be seamless rather than welded ones? What is the reasoning behind this? Thank you.
The diameter of welded pressure vessels is generally greater than 300; small-diameter pressure vessels or gas cylinders usually use seamless steel pipes.
Oxygen cylinders, argon cylinders, and acetylene cylinders – the maximum diameter commonly used is 235 mm; cylinders of this size make welding and flaw detection difficult! Therefore, seamless pipes are commonly used for manufacturing.
With too small a diameter, it is difficult to roll into a coil; using seamless tubes is more convenient.
I would like to ask everyone: for an oxygen medium, if the cylinder diameter is 1 meter, can conventional welding methods be used (welding the cylinder body and the end cap)? Is it still necessary to use seamless cylinders? Thank you for the advice.
A diameter of one meter should fall within the scope of pressure vessels, and it should be regulated in accordance with relevant standards; there are requirements regarding both the materials and the manufacturing process.

If the nominal pressure of the oxygen cylinder is known, and it is understood that the cylinder is often moved during use, then it should be clear that, under certain filling conditions, the weight of the oxygen cylinder must remain within a reasonable range. To control the weight of gas cylinders, high-strength materials should be chosen; naturally, there are options available in the market for such materials when it comes to compression and welding.
