This project will result in the creation of the world’s largest land-based membrane-type LNG storage tank, marking an important technological breakthrough in the development of large-scale liquefied natural gas storage and transportation facilities in China. The Dongguan LNG receiving station is an important hub in the natural gas storage and transportation network of South China, capable of handling the entire process including LNG unloading, storage, transfer, gasification, and delivery. The gas storage project that is now under construction is a key expansion and upgrade project for the receiving station. It utilizes advanced international membrane tank technology to build three new membrane-type liquefied natural gas tanks, each with a diameter of nearly 100 meters, resulting in a gas storage capacity of 470 million cubic meters. In addition to advantages in space utilization and cost-effectiveness, new technologies are also more environmentally friendly and low-carbon. The steel usage in the inner wall enclosure system of storage tanks has been reduced by 90%, allowing overall carbon emissions to be cut by more than a quarter. These tanks can store a variety of cryogenic substances such as liquefied natural gas, liquid ammonia, ethane, ethylene, and liquefied petroleum gas, enabling seamless fulfillment of market demands in fields such as liquefied natural gas, new energy, and chemicals – thus paving the way for future energy transitions.
Compared to traditional full-volume tanks, this project has achieved multiple breakthroughs. Under the same floor area, the effective tank capacity has increased by 10%, while the cost has been reduced by about 5%. Moreover, all of the core materials are now domestically produced, which significantly improves the utilization rate of land resources and economic efficiency; this holds great significance for further adoption within the industry. This project also boasts technical adaptability and green, low-carbon advantages. It can flexibly store various cryogenic fluids such as LNG, liquid ammonia, ethane, ethylene, and LPG, enabling seamless meeting of market demands in fields such as LNG, new energy, and chemicals, while leaving room for future energy transitions. At the same time, the amount of steel used in the inner wall enclosure system of these storage tanks is 90% less than that in traditional tanks, allowing overall carbon emissions to be reduced by more than a quarter. Thanks to the insulated and airtight design with nitrogen protection, the heat-insulation performance of the storage tank remains stable, thereby significantly enhancing its operational reliability over its entire lifetime. Image: As the first large-scale membrane-type LNG storage tank project approved in Guangdong Province, the commencement of this project marks a new phase in the development of natural gas storage facilities in Guangdong, characterized by technological advancements and improved efficiency. Upon completion, it will add 470 million cubic meters to the storage capacity, raising the total storage capacity of the Dongguan LNG receiving station to 780 million cubic meters. The annual processing capacity will also increase to 6 million tons, which will significantly enhance the station’s ability to meet demand during peak periods in winter and summer in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. This is of strategic importance for optimizing the regional energy structure, ensuring energy security, and supporting the achievement of the \"dual carbon\" goals.
