The thickness of the baffle or support plates specified in Table 6-21 on page P32 of GB/T151-2014 is always on the higher side in practice. For example, if the diameter of a heat exchanger is 1800 and the spacing between the baffles is 750, then the unsupported span of each baffle would be 1500? According to the table, the minimum thickness of the baffle is 20? Is it too thick? Moreover, the interpretation of GB151 also emphasizes that this minimum thickness does not take into account the corrosion allowance; yet in practice, the thickness of the baffle plates is around 12? Does it meet the requirements? What are the consequences if it doesn’t meet the requirements? It seems that the unsupported span lengths for our heat exchangers are all determined based on the distance between two baffle plates, as specified in Table 6-21; the value of 12 was chosen.
From the processing drawings I’ve received when I had time, the baffle thickness is basically around 10 millimeters.
