As shown in the diagram, this is a design diagram of a fixed-bed reactor operated with feed from below and a full-liquid condition; I don’t understand why that section of ceramic balls was included in the design
There is a cavity at the top of the reactor; without a filler, the interior becomes unstable； The mesh used in the upper part has excessive elasticity, and the interior is also unstable; only by installing ceramic balls can the reactor become solid and allow the reaction to proceed steadily.
If the top is an outlet, based on personal experience, it is to prevent the catalyst from entering subsequent stages
It should serve to filter, as well as provide a buffering effect I guess
It filters out impurities and pulverized catalyst, thereby protecting subsequent catalysts or preventing their introduction which could cause blockages, and extending the operational life of the device
