When using an ABB positioner, it is necessary to understand the knowledge related to the positioner’s power supply and terminal connections. Proper wiring not only helps to reduce interference but also ensures that the locator operates correctly and without errors. Below, the editor will explain how to connect the power supply and terminals of the locator. The ABB positioner and the electric actuator are connected through a seven-wire connector; the GND terminal on the positioner can remain unconnected or it can be connected to the housing of the electric actuator. In this setup, the RV, 0%, and 100% terminals of the positioner are connected to the three terminals of the feedback potentiometer of the electric actuator respectively. The 0% terminal of the positioner is connected to the actuator; during the shut-off operation, the resistance between it and the sliding arm decreases continuously at one end, while the 100% terminal of the positioner is connected to the other end, namely the sliding arm that carries the potentiometer. The OPEN, COM, and SHUT terminals are connected to the actuator respectively. A J-type connection is generally used between the power supply of the ABB actuator and the wiring panel; the feedback signal lines for the electric actuator and the motor control wires should be separated, which helps to reduce motor interference. If long connections must be used for the low-voltage signal wires of the locator, shielded signal wires should be employed, and the external shielding should be properly grounded to the control cabinet enclosure. However, we recommend that the low-voltage signal wires be as short as possible to minimize consumption.
