I originally studied mechanical design, and after graduating I went to a company that works in the field of offshore wind power. Most of the people there were from electrical engineering backgrounds; when there was a shortage of personnel for anti-corrosion work, I was forced to take on that role. Fortunately, I had always been interested in chemistry since I was young, so working on anti-corrosion projects and also handling oil management as a side job was quite enjoyable for me. But I feel that as a person in the field of chemistry, I’m quite an outlier in my workplace; I always have the impression that I don’t hold much status. The few colleagues I had left all changed jobs, and now it’s just me and my supervisor who is about to retire. I’m very worried that there’s no hope for promotion in the future (it’s not easy to achieve results in the field of corrosion prevention, unlike in electrical engineering, where once something is fixed, the managers are satisfied). I want to take some exams first as preparation for a job change in the future. After doing some research, it seems that in the field of chemistry, obtaining a certification as a registered chemical engineer is the most valuable option; there seem to be few certifications related to corrosion protection. Is it the case that corrosion protection isn’t given enough importance across China, with no opportunities for improvement in this area? I hope those who are experts in chemistry can give me some advice – what certifications would be suitable for someone working in corrosion protection? I really want to change jobs, but I don’t have anything notable to show, so I’m too hesitant to do it just like that
