We want to use fluororubber O-rings for planar sealing, with bromine as the medium. We’re not sure if there will be corrosion; the service life of the pump depends on the effectiveness of this seal. We don’t want to use PTFE seals or fluorinated O-rings, as they are too hard. Bromine has a strong ability to penetrate materials. Those with experience, please let us know. Thank you!!!
EPDM sealing rings are a bit softer; they might offer better performance, so it’s worth giving them a try.
EPDM is incompatible with bromine; it will corrode rapidly and will not provide any sealing function. Another option available today is perfluoroelastomer, which is definitely compatible and also belongs to the category of rubber elastomers – only its price is high! ! I checked the relevant manuals for fluororubber; fluororubber (VITON) is compatible with bromine. Fluororubber diaphragms are used in diaphragm pumps; during the pumping of bromine, the diaphragms were immersed in bromine for 16 days, and they ruptured. We are a bit concerned about whether fluororubber is corroded by bromine Although the diaphragm is broken, the fluororubber remains soft and has not hardened; it is slightly bulged in some areas and its color has changed in certain spots, indicating that corrosion has occurred. Using a fluororubber O-ring might help improve the situation. The width of the sealing surface is currently 3.5 millimeters; it remains to be seen how long this will hold As long as bromine does not penetrate this seal, the pump will be fine.

Perfluoroethers have a high fluorine content, so they should be able to withstand it. For now, use fluororubber (VITON); check its compatibility with bromine, and see how it performs. If that doesn’t work, then use perfluoroethers
