For the corrosion protection of steel pipes, why isn’t thicker always better? Why is it that in designs by design institutes these days, there are usually 2 coats of primer, 1 coat of intermediate coat, and 2 coats of topcoat, with each coat being 40um thick?
To possibly meet the anti-corrosion requirements, that’s the thickness required! It is important to choose the right coating; has the design institute specified a particular brand of paint? Each paint manufacturer provides different guidelines regarding thickness.
Applying too thick a layer wastes paint, increases costs, and also leads to cracking and sagging. Each different brand and type of paint has specific requirements regarding the coating thickness; it is possible to ask the manufacturer for the paint’s technical data sheet, which contains relevant information. The thickness that can be achieved with each application of the prepared paint is 40–50 um; usually, a paint layer of around 80 um is required, so two applications are needed to meet this standard.

It is determined in accordance with the design requirements; if there are special requirements, specialized anti-corrosion paint is used, and the thickness of the paint layer is set according to the standards for spraying anti-corrosion paint.
Upvote #3: Painting serves the purpose of providing corrosion protection and enhancing aesthetics; its main function is indeed corrosion prevention. Too much of it can lead to sagging and cracking, resulting in waste and increasing the load on the pipeline supports :)
If the dry film thickness of the coating is too large, it is prone to cracking, and this is not necessary; as long as the performance of the coating and its structure meet the requirements of the application conditions, that’s sufficient
