The copper tubes used in the heat exchangers of lithium bromide refrigeration units have circulating water as the fluid flowing through their tube side. When a lithium bromide chiller system shows poor cooling performance, the main cause is the leakage of circulating water into the lithium bromide solution. It was found that there was a hole in one of the copper tubes of the heat exchanger. What are the main reasons for this corrosion? I’d like to ask everyone for advice, thank you
As can be seen from the diagram, scale is attached inside the pipe, making electrochemical corrosion beneath the scale likely to occur. Due to the unevenness of the metal material, corrosion occurs at the weak areas on the metal surface beneath the scale. After corrosion occurs on the metal surface, pitting corrosion can develop beneath the scale, until the metal is perforated.
Scale inhibitors (protectants) are added to the circulating water to prevent scaling on the pipe walls, thus avoiding leaks and blockages caused by rust.
Currently, I am considering upgrading the material of the heat exchange tubes to a copper-nickel alloy. Would the performance be better with this change, while keeping the circulating water unchanged?
Chloride ions and bromide ions – these halide ions have strong penetration capabilities; it’s annoying. . .

Generally, when using such corrosive substances, it is necessary to add certain chemicals to them. The refrigeration machines used in our factory operate using calcium chloride as a coolant, and anti-corrosion chemicals have been added, with fairly good results
Well, corrosion occurs in any conductive water; it’s just a matter of time, or of how severe it will be. Just like in our factory that manufactures pharmaceuticals, we have four refrigerators that use calcium chloride as a cooling medium; there’s a lot of rust and debris inside these devices, so filtering is necessary from time to time. Later, someone from a company came to sell us a chemical for use in this purpose, and after using it, we found it to be quite effective
