Wet hydrogen sulfide can cause stress corrosion cracking in the floating head bolts of coolers. In the cooling system of sulfur acid gas stripping units in the petrochemical industry, half of the floating head bolts experience brittle fracture. A comprehensive analysis of the floating head bolt fracture was conducted using methods such as macroscopic inspection, metallography, chemical composition analysis, and process conditions, which confirmed that it was caused by a medium containing hydrogen sulfide in acidic water. It is recommended that bolts to be used under such conditions should be of relatively lower hardness, in order to reduce hardness and increase toughness.
Wet hydrogen sulfide causes brittle fracture of the floating head bolts in cooling units in petrochemical equipment. After analysis using various methods, it was confirmed that it was caused by hydrogen sulfide in the acidic water. It is recommended to use bolts with lower hardness and better toughness in this environment. .
