The image below shows the heavy diesel pipeline of a petrochemical company’s atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit; severe damage to the insulation, along with moisture present in that insulation, has caused serious corrosion of the pipeline.

Basically, many CUI issues will become apparent after 8 years, and the reason for this is quite simple； From my basic understanding, there are mainly 3 ways to address this issue: 1. Establish a sound management system for the quality of insulation construction ； 2. Development of new insulation materials and new construction methods to reduce construction difficulties and extend service life ； 3. Eliminate excessive design; insulation is not required for conditions that are not necessary.
There might also be an issue with the paint applied under the insulation layer; perhaps the primer chosen is not suitable, or the number of coating layers is too few； In areas with severe corrosion, a primer and an intermediate coat may be required.
Pipe insulation is greatly affected by the quality of construction and subsequent maintenance; ultimately, the choice of anti-corrosion coating and the quality of its application are key to preventing corrosion beneath the pipe insulation layer.
If there is insulation material in the form of plastic, non-porous fibers or foam, it can be poured around the pipe to be shaped directly, adhering tightly to the pipe after shaping. If such a process exists, the anti-corrosion effect could be much better.
Project acceptance and subsequent use management are the main issues. Such corrosion must be the result of gradual buildup over time, or it would be more appropriate to look for causes in management. For reference.
