This study analyzed the issue of early failure of a stainless steel chimney belonging to a mining company. This chimney is manufactured in accordance with the ASTM A240 316L stainless steel standard. After one year of service, numerous leaks and cracks appeared near the welds. After a visual inspection of the chimney, representative samples are taken and analyzed using methods such as visual and radiographic inspection, metallographic examination, scanning electron microscopy, energy spectrum analysis, optical emission spectroscopy, ferrite content analysis, and leak detection. The corrosion mechanism and the sequence of events leading to failure were further clarified. Two different mechanisms were identified: one is acid dew point corrosion of the inner wall of the chimney caused by the condensation of H2SO4 and HCl ； The second is stress corrosion cracking that occurs near the weld.
