If the coating undergoes chemical decomposition or swelling, the entire coating should be sandblasted and then coated with new, more corrosion-resistant paint. If the damage is caused by pinholes and a thin coating, it should be treated according to the severity of the erosion; if more than 25% of the surface is eroded, the entire coating should be sandblasted to an appropriate degree, after which a new, more corrosion-resistant coating should be applied to achieve the desired thickness. If the coating damage accounts for only a few percent of the total surface area, and it is confirmed that the remaining coating is intact, then only the damaged areas require local cleaning and re-coating. It is best to apply at least one additional coating to all surfaces.
