【Haichuan Chemical Technology Documentation】Cases of leaks in freshwater transmission using 316L stainless steel pipes. In recent years, leaks have occurred in pipes made of 316L stainless steel used for transporting freshwater within a few months after the projects were put into operation; most of these leaks occurred in the base material of the pipes, with a few occurring at the welds.
1. Test the material. 2. Detect the chloride content in freshwater quality. (Chloride ions cause severe corrosion of stainless steel; it is necessary to keep chloride levels below 25 ppm.)
Leakages in 316L stainless steel pipes while transporting fresh water are mainly caused by the breakdown of the surface passivation film during installation or operation; combined with the corrosive effect of chloride ions (Cl⁻) in the marine atmospheric environment, this leads to pitting and perforation.
