Introduction to CAD drawing: The role of the Enter key and space bar in CAD software

Those who have used Haochen CAD software know that the space bar functions in a way similar to the ENTER key. However, since the space bar is longer, it can be easily operated with both hands; in practice, it is likely to be used more often. Yet when operating it, people sometimes refer to it as the ENTER key and other times as the space bar. In fact, the functions of the two are not exactly the same. To help beginners in CAD drawing understand when they can use a space bar instead of the Enter key, thereby improving their efficiency, we will briefly explain the differences between a space bar and the Enter key here. I. Confirming CAD commands and parameter input: After entering a command or its alias (shortcut key) in the HaoChen CAD software, pressing Enter or Spacebar will execute that command. During the execution of a command, after entering the keyword for an option or the value of a parameter as required, pressing Enter or Space can be used to confirm it. II. Ending currently active CAD commands: In the HaoChen CAD software, some commands have limited parameters; once the corresponding parameters are specified, the command ends automatically. For example, when drawing a circle, once the center and radius are specified, the command to draw the circle terminates automatically ； After moving the command, selecting the object, and specifying the base point and target point, the command will also end automatically. But there are some commands that do need to be terminated manually, such as the line and polyline commands, as well as the copy command. We can keep drawing and copying indefinitely; pressing Enter or Space will terminate these commands, and of course, ESC can also be used to end them. III. Repeating a recently executed CAD command: After executing a CAD command, if you need to run it again, there is no need to enter the command name or alias; simply press Enter or Spacebar. IV. Switching to CAD grip editing mode: When the grips of an object are selected, you can directly drag the grips to change the shape of the graphic. By pressing the Space and Enter keys, you can switch between the grip editing modes of moving, rotating, scaling, and mirroring; of course, you can also select one of these modes directly from the right-click menu. There is a difference between the space bar and the enter key in CAD software, and indeed those two keys are not identical. The most obvious difference lies in fields where text is entered, as well as in those used for entering various CAD style names and defined parameters. 1. In various text input fields such as file names, layer names, layer status names, layer filters, block names, text styles, and annotation styles, the space bar is used as a normal space bar; the Enter key is required to confirm the entry. 2. For single-line text, use TEXT(DT) to enter text; the space bar adds a space, while the Enter key creates a new line. However, pressing Enter twice in a row will end the entry of single-line text. 3. When entering text in multi-line text using MTEXT(T), a space is entered by pressing a space key, and a newline is created by pressing Enter; pressing Enter multiple times adds additional lines. In the multi-line text toolbar, click the “OK” button; in newer versions, you need to click the “Close Text Editor” button in the command panel of the multi-line text editor or click with the mouse outside the text box to finish entering multi-line text. In higher versions, pressing ESC will prompt whether to keep the text, while in lower versions, pressing ESC will directly cancel text entry. 4. When entering program statements in the command line of CAD, spaces cannot be used after typing the command name directly; pressing a space is treated as pressing Enter. However, a space can be entered after typing a left parenthesis (or a double quote”). Once the number of right parentheses matches that of the left parentheses and the double quotes are also matched, no more spaces can be entered, as any space will then be interpreted as Enter. There can be spaces between parentheses and quotes. After entering the last right parenthesis, you can use the mouse or keyboard to move the cursor to that position in order to add a space; however, if the cursor is behind the last parenthesis, pressing the space key will have the same effect as pressing Enter, thereby starting the execution of that statement. For beginners in CAD drawing, the space bar and enter key in HaoChen CAD software may not seem to be very useful, but this is not the case; understanding these keys can actually help one draw CAD drawings more effectively.
