Egypt finalizes a green ammonia project with a total investment of $10 billion and a production capacity of millions of tons

Recently, Egyptian Industry Minister Khaled Hashem finalized the plan for the construction of a large-scale green ammonia plant in southeastern Egypt during a meeting with representatives of EAGA. The total investment in the project amounts to 10 billion dollars, with an initial investment of 5 billion dollars for the first phase; the total investment will double once the subsequent expansions are completed. The factory is to be located in Las Bambas, with production set to begin in 2031. Initially, it will produce 400,000 tons of green ammonia per year, with the capacity expected to increase to 1 million tons per year in the future. It is reported that the project is equipped with a complementary wind-solar integrated renewable energy system, featuring 1000 megawatts each for photovoltaic and wind power generation, resulting in a total capacity of 2000 megawatts; it operates independently from Egypt’s power grid. The project covers an area of about 100 square kilometers, and dedicated export ports and other supporting logistics facilities are built simultaneously to ensure the export of products. According to official estimates, Phase 1 of the project can generate approximately $490 million in export revenue each year, and all of its initial production capacity has already been allocated for long-term supply agreements in Central and Eastern Europe.
