I’ve been reading a book recently that mentions a phenomenon called backmixing. I’ve looked up a lot of information, but I still don’t understand what backmixing actually is. I’m asking for everyone’s help, thank you.
The material flowing forward experiences backflow in certain areas. It seems to be that meaning.
Backmixing, also known as reverse mixing, is a type of mixing phenomenon. Backmixing is not always a detrimental factor; for example, it can be beneficial to some extent when the product has catalytic properties or when the order of the parallel side reaction is higher than that of the main reaction. In batch continuous reactions, the mixing of materials within the reactor indicates good mixing conditions, which is beneficial for accelerating the reaction rate. Due to the piping connections between the reactors, there is no backmixing, allowing the reaction to proceed in the forward direction.
