Guys, I’d like to ask what the function of an expansion tank is. An expansion tank needs to be installed in the jacket of a reaction vessel; I’m not sure why. Is it perhaps to prevent the pump from running dry?

Your reaction vessels definitely require both cooling and heating processes. The reaction starts by heating up, and then cooling down as it proceeds. Therefore, an expansion tank is installed to balance the water volume and pressure in the system.
The expansion tank provided in the cooling medium system of the kettle jacket serves to accommodate the changes in the volume of the cooling medium that occur due to temperature variations. This prevents overpressure or vacuum conditions from arising in the kettle jacket, thus protecting it and helping to stabilize the suction and discharge pressures of the cooling medium pump.
The jacket of the reaction tank is used for heating; this system features an expansion tank placed at a high position, which serves to allow exhaust at the highest point during liquid addition. It also helps maintain pressure after nitrogen sealing, thereby preventing the liquid being heated or cooled from vaporizing.
