On June 7, the draft environmental impact assessment report for the capacity expansion project of the battery-grade sulfate production facility at Wanhua Chemical (Yantai) Battery Materials Technology Co., Ltd. was made public for comments. After the renovation of this facility, it will produce 81,000 tons of nickel sulfate hexahydrate crystals, 16,000 tons of cobalt sulfate heptahydrate crystals, and 9,500 tons of manganese sulfate per year. Additionally, it will generate 7,960 tons of basic magnesium carbonate, 18,000 cubic meters of magnesium sulfate solution, 500 tons of copper concentrate, 2,500 tons of manganese dioxide powder for industrial use, and 1,000 tons of crude nickel-cobalt hydroxide. According to the public information, this facility is primarily designed for the processing and production of battery-grade salts. At present, the operating costs of this facility are high, resulting in low project profits. The expansion aims to achieve three main objectives: (1) to supply raw materials for the precursor production facility, while also using some of the by-products produced internally as auxiliary materials to reduce the costs associated with precursor production. Furthermore, this expansion primarily increases the production capacity of nickel sulfate hexahydrate crystals from the current level of 10,000 gold tons to 18,000 gold tons. (2) Ensure the stable quality of precursor products during production, and utilize Wanhua Chemical’s hydrometallurgical technology to address the issues of unstable or excessive levels of magnetic substances and other parameters in battery-grade sulfates available on the market. (3) Closed-loop production of raw materials, enabling the recycling of nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium waste generated during the production of subsequent battery materials such as precursors and cathode materials.
