(hereinafter referred to as Carbon Energy Technology) announced that the electrochemical direct oceanic carbon dioxide capture (eDOC) system, developed in collaboration with Guangdong Datang International Chaozhou Power Generation Co., Ltd., had completed its sea trials in Guangdong. This breakthrough marks the transition of domestic direct oceanic carbon capture technology from the laboratory to actual oceanic applications, offering a highly promising \"Chinese solution\" for global carbon emission reduction. From August 7th to 8th, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation organized an on-site evaluation team to the “Integrated Technology Test and Demonstration Project for Electrochemical Hydrogen Storage, Carbon Capture, and Carbon Alcohol Production Based on Seawater Carbon Capture” located in Huijin Lingang Industrial Park, where an on-site assessment was conducted of the electrochemical ocean carbon capture test facility (with a seawater treatment capacity of 1.0 m³/h). The device has been in operation for approximately 600 hours in total, and it is running smoothly. The results of the 72-hour field operation test show a CO₂ extraction rate of 43.4 NL/h ; CO₂ extraction rate: 81.1% ; CO₂ purity: 63.4%; DC power consumption: 5.8 kWh/Nm³ CO₂. It is reported that this project utilizes electrochemical ocean carbon capture technology to establish a chain that combines seawater hydrogen production with CO2 capture from seawater for the production of green methanol, thereby integrating oceanic carbon sinks with clean energy production and offering an innovative approach for the sustainable development of offshore wind energy resources. The electrochemical ocean carbon capture test facility serves as a preliminary verification device for offshore testing under actual operating conditions, providing experience for the subsequent scaling up of the system. According to Kang Peng, chairman of Carbon Energy Technology, as the largest carbon sink on Earth, the oceans store approximately 93% of the world’s carbon dioxide. The CO2 concentration in the surface waters of the oceans is 110 mg/L, which is 120 times higher than that in the air. The eDOC technology developed by Carbon Energy Technology precisely regulates the pH value of seawater through electrochemical treatment, converting more than 80% of the inorganic carbon present in seawater in the form of bicarbonates into dissolved carbon dioxide, which is then separated into high-purity gaseous CO2 using membrane systems. Throughout the process, the decarbonated seawater is neutralized to restore its normal pH level before being discharged again, with no external substances introduced, thus creating a perfect closed-loop system for environmental protection. Kang Peng said, “It’s like fishing in seawater – we ‘catch’ carbon dioxide in a more efficient and cost-effective way, without damaging the marine environment.” ” Industry experts point out that the breakthrough in eDOC technology comes at a critical moment in the development of China’s new energy system. This technology can be deployed in scenarios such as offshore wind power platforms and coastal industrial zones, helping to facilitate the local utilization of new energy sources like offshore wind power. It can also be integrated with projects such as seawater desalination and green hydrogen production to manufacture high-value green chemical products, offering coastal areas a new pathway for reducing emissions – akin to a \"symphony\" that combines ocean carbon sequestration and clean energy. Kang Peng said that in the future, the \"sea mining\" development model envisioned by Carbon Energy Technology will utilize floating or island-based integrated systems to combine marine carbon resources with wind and hydrogen energy, thereby creating a closed-loop ocean energy system based on \"electricity – hydrogen – carbon – alcohol.\" This system will enable the direct production of green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at sea, providing \"zero-carbon fuel\" for ocean-going ships and aircraft and thus facilitating a sustainable economic model for the utilization of ocean energy. This is in good alignment with the requirements of Europe’s Renewable Energy Directive regarding renewable fuels of non-biological origin, and it holds the potential to open up broad international markets. As technology is scaled up for widespread use, the ocean may become humanity’s \"blue arsenal\" to combat climate change.
