Recently, the preparatory meeting and coordination session for the foundation design of the Kaishan Kenya project, the world’s first large-scale integrated project combining geothermal power generation with green fertilizer production – a project with an annual capacity of 480,000 tons of green fertilizer and associated geothermal power plants – was successfully held at the company. This project is under the responsibility of China Five Rings Engineering Corporation, which is affiliated with the China National Chemical Corporation. With this event, the project has officially entered the stage of substantive design. Located in Nyeri, Kenya, the project will utilize a 154MW geothermal power plant as well as off-peak and peak electricity from the grid to produce 200,000 tons of liquid ammonia per year through water electrolysis for hydrogen production. It will also generate 180,000 tons of urea and 300,000 tons of calcium ammonium nitrate, thus creating a complete industrial chain based on \"green electricity – green hydrogen – green ammonia\". Once completed, the project will effectively fill the gap in fertilizer supply in Kenya, saving the country around $200 million annually in expenses related to fertilizer imports. It will also create numerous jobs, helping Kenya achieve its goal of generating 100% green energy by 2030. This meeting conducted in-depth discussions on key topics such as the technical solutions for the basic engineering design phase of the project, the division of responsibilities among designers, design standards, coding rules, coordination procedures, and the schedule. During the meeting, the parties focused on discussing green energy solutions centered on geothermal power generation, as well as fertilizer solutions. Given the characteristics of Kenya’s power grid, the meeting also discussed in detail plans to ensure power supply under extreme conditions.
