Right-angled lap joint + diagonal reinforcement – is this connection method for grounding flat bars compliant or not? ★Grounding is achieved through right-angled lapping, with an additional diagonal flat bar added; this is a common practice for flat bar lapping on construction sites. (Figure 1) ★According to Figure 5: The ‘Code for Construction and Acceptance of Grounding Systems in Electrical Installation Projects’ (GB50169-2016), the overlap length of flat steel should be twice its width, and at least 3 edges must be welded together. ★However, the specifications do not provide clear rules for right-angle lap joints plus diagonal reinforcement. In terms of overlap length, a right-angle overlap combined with diagonal reinforcement seems to meet the requirements for overlap area if welded properly. ★Even China State Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau has applied for similar utility model patents. (Figure 3) ■So, is this type of connection compliant or not?
So, is this type of connection compliant or not? Safe365 shares some personal insights for reference only. 1️⃣ This approach attempts to reinforce right-angled joints using diagonal reinforcements, but the joint requirements specified in the standards ensure a larger weld area as well as greater mechanical strength and electrical conductivity reliability – making it the most reliable method that has been proven effective. 2️⃣ As shown in Figures 2 and 4, it is difficult for this method to achieve effective three-sided welding around the main contact surface. Although the additional diagonal flat bars increased the number of connection points, none of these connection points met the specification requirements fully. 3️⃣ This non-standard approach requires more welds, which in turn increases the number of process control points and the risk of failures due to poor welding quality. ➤➤Therefore, in the author’s opinion, a right-angled overlap combined with diagonal reinforcement should not be considered a compliant approach that meets standard requirements. The grounding system should aim for simplicity, reliability, and standardization, and it is necessary to strictly adhere to the principle of an overlap of twice the width and welding on at least three sides. (Figure 6)
