On December 9, the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation held a special exchange event on plastic recycling during the launch ceremony for the Gulei Zero-Carbon Park. Experts from government departments, leading enterprises in the industry, and international platforms gathered to discuss key issues such as the management of marine plastics, the recycling of low-value plastic waste, and the circular use of packaging materials in industrial parks, with the aim of fostering innovation in approaches to addressing plastic pollution in coastal areas. The exchange event was chaired by Pang Guanglian, a member of the Party Committee Standing Committee of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. He said that addressing plastic pollution is an important task for China in advancing ecological civilization construction and the green transformation of the chemical industry. In recent years, China has made continuous progress in building \"waste-free cities\", managing marine waste, and establishing plastic recycling systems; the coastal areas have accumulated a number of practical experiences that can be replicated and promoted. During the subsequent keynote speech session, several guests shared cutting-edge achievements and typical cases. Man Juan, head of the International Exchange Department of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, presented a comprehensive approach under the \"waste-free city\" policy framework, covering source reduction, sorted recycling, and coordinated land-sea management. Lu Yi, vice president of Zhejiang Yingruike, provided a detailed overview of China’s approaches to establishing marine plastic recycling systems, making breakthroughs in recycling technologies, and fostering coordination within the relevant industrial chains. He presented innovative examples covering the entire process, from recycling at fishing ports and salvage operations to the high-value reuse of these plastics, highlighting the practical achievements made by the industry in promoting circular economic development. Jiang Fengfeng, chairman of Xiamen Land-Sea Environmental Protection, presented a report that addressed the industry challenges related to the difficulty in collecting, transporting, and utilizing low-value plastic waste. She discussed the company’s innovative advancements in key technologies such as sorting and improvement processes, decentralized treatment methods, and melt granulation, and shared how large-scale solutions implemented in various locations have helped to achieve simultaneous improvements in economic and environmental outcomes. Sun Yemin, Executive Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Leju Technology, shared insights on petrochemical park scenarios, detailing how the closed-loop management system for shared pallets – involving leasing, recycling, cleaning, regeneration, and re-leasing – has achieved significant results in reducing the use of new materials, cutting carbon emissions, and optimizing costs. Sun Zhiyang, AEPW’s Chief Advisor for China, examined typical cases of AEPW’s cross-border cooperation projects from the perspective of international collaboration, and suggested that through the integration of resources and the provision of expertise via platforms, coastal cities can more quickly develop plastic pollution management systems that are in line with international standards. The participants agreed that this exchange presented, from multiple perspectives, the latest achievements in the field of plastic recycling in China, offering new ideas for coastal cities to improve their governance systems, promote green development among enterprises, and strengthen international cooperation. The meeting came to a successful conclusion through practical exchanges.
