Gas lift is a operation in liquid-gas phase systems, in which a gas is introduced to disrupt the existing gas-liquid equilibrium, causing the solute to move from the liquid phase into the gas phase. At equilibrium, the gas phase concentration Y in the container is in balance with the gas phase concentration x. When gas is introduced into or removed from this system, the gas carries away the solutes present in the gas phase, causing Y to decrease; this disrupts the equilibrium, and as a result x also decreases. For example, if ammonia is dissolved in wastewater, its concentration can be reduced by blowing compressed air into the water
The stripping method brings wastewater into direct contact with water vapor, allowing volatile toxic and harmful substances in the wastewater to diffuse into the gas phase in a certain proportion, thereby achieving the separation of pollutants from the wastewater. Stirring is achieved with the help of a water vapor medium. Simple distillation is used for volatile substances that are miscible with water, taking advantage of the fact that under gas-liquid equilibrium conditions, their concentration in the gas phase is higher than that in the liquid phase. Through direct heating with steam, it is enriched in the gas phase in a certain proportion at its boiling point (a temperature between the boiling points of water and the volatiles). Steam distillation is used for volatile pollutants that are immiscible or nearly immiscible with water. By taking advantage of the fact that the boiling point of the mixture is lower than that of its individual components, high-boiling-point volatiles can be separated and removed at lower temperatures.

According to the principle of phase equilibrium, in a liquid mixture at a constant temperature, each component has an equilibrium partial pressure. When the equilibrium partial pressure of that component in the gas phase in contact with the liquid phase approaches zero, and the equilibrium partial pressure in the gas phase is much lower than that in the liquid phase, the component will transfer from the liquid phase to the gas phase – this is the principle of stripping.
