Significant progress made in the development of catalysts for polycarbonate synthesis at Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics Source: National Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Catalysis and Carbon Dioxide Utilization | Publication date: 2025-02-13 Recently, the National Key Laboratory of Low-Carbon Catalysis and Carbon Dioxide Utilization at the Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made important advances in the field of catalysts for polycarbonate synthesis; researchers have successfully developed high-performance catalysts for this purpose. This catalyst has been used industrially in polycarbonate production plants of domestic companies with a capacity of 260,000 tons per year, enabling the successful production of qualified polycarbonate products. Polycarbonate is an important carbonyl-containing polymer material with excellent physical and chemical properties, and it is widely used in fields such as electronics, automobiles, construction, and machinery. The traditional methods for synthesizing polycarbonates rely primarily on the phosgene route: dimethyl carbonate is produced through the oxidative carbonylation of methanol, and diphenyl carbonate is obtained via transesterification, followed by the synthesis of polycarbonates. This represents the green and environmentally friendly approach for the polycarbonate industry today and in the future. This technology provides strong technical support for the green development and transformation and upgrading of China’s polycarbonate industry.
