Becoming an Excellent Process Engineer” --12-- “How to Become an Excellent Engineer?” I am a college graduate who has just started working in a factory. I really want to become an excellent process engineer, but I’m not sure where to begin – for example, which aspects of equipment and instruments I need to master and to what extent. I would appreciate some advice from those with more experience. I’m not sure whether the original poster works in a design institute or in a chemical company; I’ll share some insights based on my experience in the chemical industry: generally, it takes at least two years to become a decent process technician, after which one can be promoted to an assistant engineer, and after five years to an engineer. This is the typical path to obtaining professional titles, but whether someone is truly a qualified engineer cannot be determined solely by these titles. I work with equipment, and from my experience working with colleagues, I believe it takes at least eight to ten years to become an excellent engineer. A process engineer must first be familiar with the process flow, including the unit operations, and possess a comprehensive set of process specifications for a given plant; of course, it is even better to have knowledge of several sets of specifications for different products. In my opinion, a process engineer should at the very least be able to specify the parameters for selecting equipment, so that the personnel in charge of equipment can proceed with the selection. Of course, it would be even better if they could have a deeper understanding of equipment structure, materials, and the operating procedures for such equipment. Regarding an understanding of instruments, I believe one should know the functions and principles of various control valves, as well as the mechanism by which interlocks are implemented. In fact, there is a lot to learn. In our factory, there are no less than forty process engineers with professional titles, but very few of them are truly worthy of my respect. It is highly recommended to actively request to work on the front line in shift rotation for one to two years. First, overcome the challenge of theory and practice!

Well, that’s true. Without several years of practical experience, even though one has a solid grasp of the theoretical knowledge and can come up with many ideas for technical improvements, it’s not certain that those ideas can actually solve real-world problems.
Twelfth, one must have a long-term vision, be familiar with equipment, instruments, and electrical systems, and broaden their knowledge.
There is another question: what are the standards for excellence?
Be honest and diligent in both actions and tasks; use your heart and mind, be willing to make efforts, and approach everything with seriousness, even to the utmost extent. Then, things will fall into place naturally.
Pay more attention to solving practical problems. Make progress by solving problems! Continuously strengthen technological upgrades and seek optimization within them!
