Look at the structure of the heat exchanger; it’s impossible to provide a detailed description without diagrams. Generally, it is distinguished by the flanges – the area inside the flanges corresponds to the shell side, while the area outside the flanges corresponds to the tube side
During use, the choice between the tube side or the shell side is determined based on the properties of the material or the requirements for heat transfer; when creating diagrams in a DCS, it is necessary to indicate whether it is the tube side or the shell side
The head is connected to the tube side, while the sides are connected to the shell side
On-site: The end cover corresponds to the pipe side, while the body corresponds to the shell side. DCS: The display will show them separately (for clear visibility)
The side where the fluid flows inside the tubes is known as the tube side, while the side where the fluid flows outside the tubes is known as the shell side.
The side with the headers is the tube side, while the side opposite is the shell side
