This pipeline is used for the ammoniation reaction. The pressure in the reactor is 5 bar.
Under overpressure, if one barrier breaks, the second one will also break, without any reduction in safety. In the absence of overpressure, one of the valves may fail due to corrosion or other issues; this can be detected using a pressure gauge, and there are two additional protective mechanisms in place
Building on this topic further, if it’s for safety reasons, wouldn’t using two safety valves be sufficient? Why use both rupture disks and safety valves? And the set pressure of the burst disc is even higher than that of the safety valve?
Since it is a high-risk reaction, to prevent the reactor from experiencing sudden overpressure when the safety valve is unable to release pressure fast enough, a safety valve is used in parallel with a burst disc. It is correct that the set pressure of a burst disc is higher than that of a safety valve. Generally, a safety valve is sufficient for pressure relief. Blowout valves are used for pressure relief only when the wrong material is fed or the reaction gets out of control due to temperature increase.
This is the first time I’ve seen it; it feels strange; 1. The set pressure for the safety valve is 8.0 bar, while the set pressure for the two burst discs is 9.0 bar. This means that the safety valve will activate before the PSE bursts – isn’t this a logical contradiction? 2. Why is the tag number of the safety valve the same as that of one of the rupture disks? Did I miss it? So based on these two points, I personally think there might be an error in the drawings, which haven’t been reviewed yet ; Another approach is that, if the drawings are correct, it is necessary to examine the overall manufacturing process in order to determine the purpose and reason behind such a setup ; These are just my personal opinions; please feel free to correct me.
