Hello, fellow sailors. I recently had an idea while studying PID. Is it possible to use the heat of reaction from an exothermic reaction as a heat source for the reboiler of a distillation column? If coupling is a concern, an additional reboiler can be installed as a decoupling solution. If the control scheme is mature, wouldn’t it be possible to save a lot of steam? I wonder if any of you sea friends have come across such apps? Are there any relevant materials that can be used as a reference? Let’s exchange ideas and discuss together. Thank you!

There are too many of them. Waste heat boilers work in this way; they are used in the ammonia synthesis process to recover the energy from the reaction gases and generate medium-pressure steam that can be used for heating in other parts of the system
There are many mature processes for utilizing this waste heat. If the reaction materials are corrosive, a graphite heat exchanger can be used to convert the waste heat into steam for utilization.
This waste heat utilization process is quite mature; I’m not aware of the specific details of your process, so I suggest you ask those with more experience in the company about it.
Theoretically, it may not be feasible; in the case of a distillation tower, the temperature of the heating medium must be higher than that of the material, while in the case of a reactor, the temperature of the cooling medium must be lower than that of the material – which presents a contradiction.
It mainly depends on whether there is a temperature difference. It’s achievable.
