On January 10, 2025, the pilot project—which involves the construction by Yulin Zhongke Clean Energy Innovation Research Institute, technical support from the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and investment from Dalian Fude Jinyu New Energy Co., Ltd.—successfully completed its first trial run with raw materials fed into the system, resulting in the production of qualified magnesium hydride products. This project utilizes a new preparation technology for magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage materials using the \"one-pot method,\" which possesses independent intellectual property rights in China. This technology was developed by the research teams led by Chen Ping and Cao Hujun from the Hydrogen Energy and Advanced Materials Research Department’s Hydrogen Energy Chemistry Research Center at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. The 150-ton/year magnesium hydride pilot project focuses on the development and production of magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials as well as high-efficiency hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalysts, with the aim of establishing production processes for high-quality magnesium-based solid hydrogen storage materials, along with related solid hydrogen storage equipment and systems. Magnesium-based solid-state hydrogen storage systems are among the most promising hydrogen storage technologies; they can bridge the gap between hydrogen energy and fossil fuel systems, transforming the applications of renewable energy. They are of great significance for the safe and efficient storage and transportation of large quantities of hydrogen, as well as for large-scale hydrogen-thermal-electric coupling storage applications.
